No matter where he went, the sounds of the sea still resonate with him. Having grown up in one of the most remote corners of Canada, there was not much to do but look out your window when it was not covered in ice and try to figure a way out. For the man leaning against his new Ford Bronco this is almost a different planet to what he is used to. The lights of Los Angeles are stretched out in front of him and at this moment, all he can hear is the subtle sounds of the North Atlantic.
It was not that long ago that Noah Stroud was standing on the deck of a fishing boat in a fight for personal and financial survival. Having been born closer to the Arctic Circle than to any major city gave him a very unique perspective on life. He did not need anything from anybody. Noah was given the gift of size and power from an early age. That allowed him to join the fishing fleet two years before most men were allowed to. As a greenhorn he was subject to the abuses and trials that come with the trade. Soon his hands bled and his massive frame ached from the punishment of the sea. Eventually though, he grew used to it and before long he was a full share fisherman.
Being a full member of the crew carries a lot of weight depending on the boat that you are working on. If your captain knows what he is doing and actually gives a shit about the people working for him, then you are going to be looked after. Stick around long enough and the guys that haul gear with you on deck become a family to you. For Noah his deck mates were his family since memories of his parents are a distant thought. It was not their fault of course, they were just very honest to him. Either stay and exist in one of the coldest, loneliest corners of the planet, or leave and at least give yourself a chance at doing something. Thankfully, Noah never grew up around liquor or drugs, the two things you could find easier than snow on the bottom of your boot in winter.
All of that came later once he was able to earn enough to enjoy the finer things in life. Living on the edge and working in a very dangerous environment makes you think about all of the things you are missing. Once those ropes were tied down and the old man gave the all clear, it was time to hit the bars and see how much damage you could do to yourself and to others before setting back out again. How does the saying go?
“What’s the point of living if you can’t feel alive?”
Booze, women, gambling, any chance Noah had at feeling a thrill he would take. When that was not enough he would just start fighting. Eventually, he was making enough money beating the hell out of drunks and burn outs to start making a name for himself. Noah Stroud was living a life worth the danger.
A helicopter can be heard flying over him. He looks up and notices that it is a LAPD helicopter making its way towards the city. He narrows his gaze at the searchlight and takes a deep breath.
The search light is the last thing he thought he would ever see. He finally woke up on a US Coast Guard base in a hospital bed. It would be a few days until he found out that he was the only person to survive from a horrific fire at sea. The only people that really knew him were gone and he was alone once more.
Stroud watches the helicopter fly off into the night and breathes a little easier. In the distance he can see the Crypto.com arena, site of his in ring debut. Not much is known about his opponent, Salvatore Impasato. What he does know is that anybody standing in his way will end up like everybody else in his life….
Just a forgotten memory.
